The Old Fart's walk into the Big Muddy
Matt Bai has a NY Times magazine cover story on the development of the Old Fart's military policy and how he grew to love Iraq. While Bai does wander off into barbecue loving territory, he does have enough space to show an interesting thought path for the geezer. One thing does stand out, early in his career, the Old Fart was staunchly opposed to using troops for ill-defined missions based on poor planning. Despite the length of the exposition, there is no clear reason why he now supports an ill-defined mission based on poor planning with no realizable goal in Iraq. Thirty years ago, he would have been adamant in his opposition to this sort of military adventurism. Is there any reason beyond his quixotic quest for the White House?
