The Big Fool says to push on.
Just like Nixon did thirtysome years ago with VietNam.
And no matter what he does or doesn't do, he won't pay any price for another of his failures, that's what the little people are for.
President George Bush has told senior advisers that the US and its allies must make "a last big push" to win the war in Iraq and that instead of beginning a troop withdrawal next year, he may increase US forces by up to 20,000 soldiers, according to sources familiar with the administration's internal deliberations.Leaving right away would be a disaster so you keep plugging away, hoping against hope that something will make the final bugout less embarrassing. And in the interim how many more fathers and sons and mothers and daughters will die in Our Dear Embattled Leader's vain quest to look glorious instead of ignominious.
And no matter what he does or doesn't do, he won't pay any price for another of his failures, that's what the little people are for.

I think you hit the nail on the head when you suggested that leaving Iraq would be embarrassing. We keep hearing that taking our troops out of Iraq would create chaos in that country. What on earth do they think is going on now?
Iraqis want us OUT. The equivalent of "Yankee Go Home" signs have been seen in Baghdad for months now. The Iraqi government wants us to leave. Does anyone think it's at all peculiar that Saddam Hussein managed to put together an army that was fairly effective...they at least had the capability of fighting back, but the U.S. has had three years to "train" an army that would protect Iraq, and we haven't managed to do it?
Americans need to face reality. We have brought death, turmoil and devastation to a country that was doing no harm to us. As regrettable as that is, staying there is not going to fix it. Our presence in Iraq brought terrorists into that country, and our presence will keep them there.
Nothing maddens me more than to hear Dubya or other politicians saying "We have to fight them there so we won't have to fight them there." What gave us the right to take our problems to another country and dump them there?
Nobody wants to see military action taking place on the streets of America. But the only reasonable, workable way to protect this country is to strengthen our borders, track all foreign visitors, and make sure they do what they say they're here to do, and that they leave when they're supposed to leave. And we need to ignore Bush's accusations that those of us who want this country to take control of who comes here is nothing but isolationism. It's nothing of the sort. It is our right...no, it is our responsibility to know who is entering our country, and what they are doing here.
While I agree that the Bushies want to save face, I also think their primary reason for wanting to stay in Iraq has to do with the fact that they have not yet been able to pump all the oil out of the ground over there. Their plans to build permanent military bases in Iraq speaks volumes. They have no intentions of leaving.
Our election last week proved that Americans want a change of course in a number of things, including Iraq. Keeping our troops there, or sending in another 20,000 will accomplish nothing other than more dead Americans and Iraqis.
I have a 19 year old grandson. Bush cannot have him. My family and ancestors have fought for America in every war we've ever had, going all the way back to the American Revolution. And they've died in those wars. Even now, we would be willing to protect our beloved country, but not for a lie. Not ever for a lie.
