If you are going to do a cover

You should put your own mark on it like the Cleverlys cleverly do with this Zombies hit.

Comments:
Well, there's some covers where deviating far from the original is simply sacrilege. Anybody who plays fast and loose with Townes van Zandt's Pancho and Lefty, for example, should be tied to a stake in the middle of a fire ant pile and left to bake in the Texas sun for, oh, a good two weeks or so, that ought to be about right. On the other hand, there's some covers that are so different from the original that they're basically new songs -- sometimes better songs. I'm thinking of Cat Power's cover of "The Sleepwalker", which took a whiny woman-dun-me-wrong song from an obscure emo New Zealand band and turned it into something mysterious and angry about maybe a father-daughter relationship...

That said, if you're going to cover something that was fluff to begin with, well sure, play with it. I don't think anybody ever confused the Zombies with being anything other than fluffy bubble gum pop...

I will grant you the Zombies were pop but not bubblegum. You need to keep your herring-snapper musical airs to yourself when you talk about others childhoods.
